The Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES) has been going strong since 1848 and is very proud of its contributions to our community. While the organization may sound like it is all about BOSTON, in reality the BSCES is the MASSACHUSETTS section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). When the BSCE decided to join ASCE and be the Massachusetts section, we chose to retain our old name because it has such a rich history, even older than the ASCE, who were founded in 1852. However, when it comes to K-12 STEM Education, we do not even set Massachusetts as our limit. Our contests are open to K-12 students across New England and we also help coordinate activities all across the United States.
Many years ago, one of our members (Reed Brockman), after seeing that it was very difficult to get schools and parents to visit a subpage within the www.bsces.org webpage, he decided to buy the URL www.engineeryourfuture.org - and then this website grew from there. Technically, the group behind the K-12 outreach activities put together by the BSCES is the Public Awareness and Outreach Committee, still led by Reed Brockman.
We are always up to something. We never go a month with at least one activity and there are months we are doing something almost daily. Our policy is to never charge a school, parent or teacher for anything we do, and we have worked with hundreds of schools all over New England. All of our volunteers need a background check (and will need one every two years) and we also highly encourage volunteers to take the training "Stewards of Children" by From Darkness to Light.
