Future Careers

What is it?

Pilot program for a future extension of the Future City Competition.  This is free, like everything else the BSCES does. The purpose of the competition is to envision, within a pre-defined city 250 years in the future, one specific career.  Students are to make a maximum 7 minute video depicting this career, responding to these 5 topics:

  1. What is the difference between this career today versus 250 years ago, and what changes in the world or technologies make this future work different?
  2. What is a typical workday like?
  3. What skills / knowledge are necessary for this work and how were they acquired?
  4. What are the most satisfying aspects of this work?
  5. What are some of the greatest challenges and how do you overcome those challenges?

Who?

Teams of HIGH SCHOOL students. The first 10 teams in the US that contact the coordinator via this site and express sincerity in completing the videos and participating in the associated Q&A from a panel of judges. To apply, the teams must have an educator overseeing them and be associated with an official in-school or after school program (homeschool is official in-school) and supply proof.

When?

Teams can begin when registered.  The competition will be online, Saturday April 30, 2022, 10 AM.

Restrictions

This competition must have a level playing field to be successful.  No team is to spend more than 100 dollars in the process of making this video, and even if equipment other than smartphones and computers are previously owned, they will need to be considered in the cost.  This includes green screens, costumes other than regular clothing, and props.  All work must be completely that of the competitors.

The scoring

Each of the 5 subject items for the video, as listed above, are worth 15 points.  Evidence of teamwork and disciplined research is worth 10 points.  VIdeo cohesiveness and organization is worth 10 points.  Satisfactorily providing the worksheet verifying that the work was completed by the competitors at a cost of under $100 is worth 5 points, for a total score of 100 points maximum.

The prizes

We don't know yet.  Over the year, our volunteers will search for great, unique donated experiential prizes for the most outstanding teams.
